It is a popular base for hiking and camping during the summer months, as it is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Alaska, but the town is also rich with history and local culture. It’s also not your typical “tourist” town so be prepared for an unusual experience and a quiet independent adventure here. McCarthy is a truly unique place and its isolation makes it one of the most magical places in Alaska. Then, from the parking lot walk, bike, or take a shuttle van into McCarthy, which is 1/2 mile away across the footbridge. Or, folks can choose a short-term parking rate of $5 if staying for 4 hours or less. ✔️ Parking rates range from $10 per day, per vehicle. Please check the current schedule on the board. ✔️ Regular round-trip transportation to downtown McCarthy is available from across the footbridge two times per hour. There is only a footbridge and a reliable shuttle that runs to and from town. You cannot drive into the town of McCarthy. Once reaching the end of McCarthy Road, by the footbridge, visitors need to park at Base Camp Kennicott. Rough road conditions can and will appear more often after heavy rain and in the shoulder seasons. Experiencing a flat tire is not uncommon if road conditions are poor. Pack a spare tire and fill your tank with gas beforehand! No gasoline or fuel is available in McCarthy or on the 60 miles of road. With brush on the edges of the road, some animals are quite camouflaged. I have seen lynx, moose, eagles, swans, owls, and bears on the drive. ![]() While the unpaved road can be challenging to drive, it is also very scenic and provides stunning views and wildlife sightings! The road follows the old route of the Copper River Northwest Railway as a way to access the town of McCarthy and the nearby copper mines of Kennicott. Always plan for the worst conditions (they can pop up suddenly) and hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised with an easy drive. If you are driving, the town of McCarthy is only accessible by the McCarthy Road, which is a gravel road that runs for 60 miles from the town of Chitina, located on the west bank of the Copper River at its confluence with the Chitina River. However, one of the most popular ways to experience the park is by visiting the small towns of McCarthy and Kennicott, situated in the park. You can explore the remote and diverse landscape by hiking, camping, or even taking a scenic flight.
